During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and record a new album with an entirely new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begin an extensive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
