The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the future generations would be able to read the words. However, many of the words were replaced with foreign ones, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Toto's early history which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demands of modern, contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation that produced ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.
In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own range of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and increased the firm's market share.
In the 90s, Toto began to focus on research and development for water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve customers and boost profits. The company embraced a just-in time method of managing supply chains and applied the same method in its sales program. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto has been able to continue to innovate with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. The company makes use of recycled water for its manufacturing process, and has a green buying policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than standard models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It hosts exhibits on Toto’s seminal products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and even bath units. In an additional gallery, you can see Toto products sold all over. The museum has a bathroom with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a pretty straightforward rock group. The band started out as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster but not without its difficulties. Record companies put the band on spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to meet the deadline. Toto was able achieve this with the help from the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience since the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.
The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. But the album also contains some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distorted AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the classic sextet format and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released a few months later, and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
