The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the next generation would be able to read them. However, many words were being replaced with foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.
Origins
The company was founded in 1917 and its early years were a mirror of Japan's economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demands of modern, contemporary urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other manufacturers' products to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the 1990s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company implemented a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and applied the same method for its sales process. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction with the customer.
Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company also uses recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than conventional models.
The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto's most famous products as well as their evolution, group companies (all of which are made of ceramics) and the history of plumbing and other products like bath units. In a separate gallery you can see Toto products sold all over. The museum has the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the band, members of the band did session work for a variety of musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a pretty straightforward rock band. The group started out as a group and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its share of issues. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release an album that was a success or they would drop the album. Luckily for Toto, they did, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their prior experience. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.
The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your mind. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and should sound like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group went on an extensive world tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe who was occupied with Yes at the time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin.
