Upgrades can boost the stats of a piece and, sometimes, even add extras. The value of these upgrades is determined by their tiers, requirements, and the amount of random augmentations that are applied.

Players can reroll equipment in three categories: physical power, spell power, and health. Leveling
Leveling is an option that lets players increase the base stats of weapons, armor, helms, and trinkets. The Upgrade Station lets you combine an item with upgrade materials, and then pay a fee in Happy Tickets or Happy Stars. The process will consume upgrade materials and grant the item an increased level, which gives the item a boost in the area. This process can be repeated until the highest level of an item is attained.
Items that have upgraded base stats display an icon of blue in their slot. Unlike enchantments, however, upgrade components don't stack with each other, but can only be added to a single item at one time. Additionally each upgrade component will require a particular number of items to be used, as well as an appropriate amount for the equipment.

The items can be upgraded by adding upgrade components to equipment and weapons. These will provide additional effects or an increase in quality of the item. Once an upgrade component is placed in an item it cannot be removed and replaced freely, however, the glyphs that are used in gathering tools can be swapped out without restriction.
Upgrading an item can increase its Mark Level and/or Rarity. In addition, some upgrade components have additional modifiers that can improve the item's stats.
The upgrade to the helm "Foundation of the Sun" for instance, increases the base defense and gives an additional 20% chance to block. The DPS "Wildfire" however increases damage from weapons.
Some items are better off being upgraded not so much for their improved stats, but because it allows players to get the most value out of a perfect roll on the item. For example, a perfect-rolled 200/6 504 armor set piece is highly sought-after in the melee PvP community and could be worth 20-50x more than the non-upp'd version.
The game will highlight the requirements once you choose the upgrade component that goes into the item. These include the item type (either weapon or armor) and the level of the item and the Upgrade Token required, and the amount of progress required to complete the upgrade.
Once you've satisfied the requirements for upgrading the game will put the item in your inventory and the progress bar will update to show how close to completing it. You can also check the status of an upgrade by going to any NPC that upgrades items.
