World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Item upgrades can be used to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and boost additional stats.
The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's base stats increases as it is upgraded. The value is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that must be altered to upgrade an item.
Item level is a widely used measure of power, and can be found on all item tooltips. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to a lower level). Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.
When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment players can evaluate the levels of the item. It's a good indicator of an item's quality and the amount of damage it is capable of causing. Comparing items in a vendor's stock can be done by using the level of the item.
The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are a few theories about how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that determines how much an item's stats are worth. It considers that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. This process could result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is usually quite close to the actual Blizzard item level.
This is not the only thing that affects the value of an item. The degree of the area in which the item dropped can also alter its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit score. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have a higher value.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players not to restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to motivate them to try out other weapons. The stats of a base weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modification, which are themselves enhanced by the player's level.
The upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. A grey or white item for instance, will only be upgraded one time however, items that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher costs.
Another method of altering the stats on an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and are available in all sizes and shapes. The affixes can do things like give the item additional damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing cooldowns) or make the item unique by putting an additional name to the item.
Currently, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circles arrows. This will cost a certain amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other methods of rerolling.
Players can choose to upgrade an item by a specific stat or reroll attaches. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However, all items will have at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an item that is unique, or an item that has a God Roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to reroll attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item level, and the item compare interface will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the odds of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the strength of those properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to upgrade their gear in earlier waves and is therefore more valuable in early game runs than in later ones, because most players value greater weapon scaling and defense over damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each item level and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn by using the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck or to increase the existing Luck of an item up to 140.
Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that is able to deal damage by 5%. These items are available from the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item in the event that it fails.
The success rate of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased as much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail can't exceed 100%.
The success of an can be affected by the Luck of that item. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent, and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.
Note that item upgrade s are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects may be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
