Replacement Handles For Windows
Window handles are among the most frequently used components of double-glazed windows. As time passes, they could get worn out or rusted.
You'll need to know your current handle's spindle length and its fixings before you replace it. This can be done by looking at the base of the handle that was previously used.
Handle
Over time uPVC window locks and handles can be damaged by wear and tear or by intentional or accidental damage. It can be that the lock or handle becomes difficult to close or open or not even locked. If this happens, it could be tempting to replace the entire window unit, but this isn't always necessary. In most instances an upgrade to the handle or lock is all that's needed.
The most commonly used kind of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. The handle is equipped with an external spindle that is protruding out of the handle. It slots into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. It's important to match the right handle and lock to your windows to ensure that they function properly, which is why we have a wide range of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.
When replacing a uPVC window handle, it's recommended to use screw cap caps to cover the screws to ensure the screws are secure and prevent them from rust. You can also use a washer, spacer or another sealant to make a tighter fit. A screw cap that is in place will also stop water and debris from getting into the handle and cause damage.
Once the handle has been removed from the window it's recommended to wash the spindle of the new handle, and also the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions correctly and also keep dirt out of the multipoint lock.
The next step is to set up the uPVC handle. It is important to read the instructions that came with the new handle and look at your previous one to get a better understanding of how it's done. Most of the time, the process is very straightforward. However, if you experience any issues that aren't covered in this guide It is recommended to contact our team for additional advice.
It is also important to note that if replacing the uPVC cockspur handle (also called an Espag handle) you must determine the height of the steps on the window in order to determine the proper size of handle. The step height is the distance from the base or frame of the window up to where the cockspur's nose handle rests when it is put in place.
Hinges
The hinges might not be aligned with the frame of your window when windows begin to open and shut with a visible gap. This is usually an easy fix and can be solved by installing a new set of replacement hinges for windows. We can offer a variety of different options, and can even modify the size of the hinges to fit your requirements.
We can provide a variety of hinges for upvc and timber windows. They are available in a choice of colors that match the frames of your existing windows and come with all fixings to install. If you have a double-glazed window that has an older style of hinge, we are able to provide a variety of repair screws that will allow you to re-cut the thread back into the frame.
We offer a range of different hinge types that range from traditional casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle, through to fire escape egress hinges for use on larger-sized side hung windows. These are designed to open fully in the event of a crisis and incorporate an easy-clean position to make it easy to clean. We also stock hinges with restricted egress that are designed to limit the opening angle of the window to a maximum of 100mm, ideal for family homes with children.
A squeaky hinge could be a sign that the hinges are wearing out, this is often due to the rubbing of metal against. A small amount of lubricant might help, but should the noise continue to be heard, it is likely that the hinges need to be replaced.
Plumb windows help avoid optional binding, this means that the operating sash of the window is line with the frame, which ensures that it closes and opens properly. If a window is not plumb, it may have difficulty opening and closing, or may become damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.
You can purchase replacement upvc windows hinges in imperial and metric sizes. In general, the size in metric is a bit more precise, however this isn't really noticeable once they are fitted. The first corner holes on the track are standard but the other holes can vary depending on the original hardware. We recommend that you measure the holes in your existing frame prior to purchasing any upvc hinges to be sure that they are the right dimensions.
Crank
Over time, wear and tear could cause damage to your window handle the lock, crank mechanism or even the handle. This could affect the ease of opening and closing your windows as well as compromising their security. If your window is difficult to open or shut or if you hear a clicking sound when you turn the handle it could mean you need to replace the mechanism. If you're unable to lock your window or the multipoint lock is broken, it may also be worth considering replacing this component of the hardware too.
A new window crank is able to be replaced with minimal effort, but you need to buy the correct size replacement. Make sure the replacement has the same step height as your old one that can be established by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch that runs along the track running across the bottom of the window frame. Alternatively, you can determine the length of the spindle on your current handle to determine what size you need to replace it with.
The type of handle that is fitted to your window will determine the type of crank mechanism that is required for your casement and windows with awnings. Espag handles are equipped with a spindle that is a mental component on the back that is connected to the window frame and controls the window mechanism, while cockspur handle have pegs that are held to the frame by screws of three or four that are inserted into the frame and sash.
It's simple to replace the window operator once you've found the appropriate replacement. Remove upvc replacement door handles for mounting trims from the casement cover and gently lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Remove any rusted trim screws and then check the operating lever with the old to ensure that they match. Screw the replacement to the window frame. Replace any screws that are damaged or bent. Then, place the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
